Booking A Lesson With A Teacher

Last Updated: Apr 30, 2016 07:44PM CDT
This help article explains how to book a lesson with a teacher in the JamClass marketplace by JamKazam.

First you'll want to find a teacher who looks like a good fit for you. If you haven't done this yet, please click here for a help article on how to search teachers in the JamClass marketplace. When you've found a teacher you like, you'll see a button displayed to book a lesson with a teacher on the search results page (pictured below).

If you have not already taken advantage of the TestDrive program, you'll have the option to book a TestDrive lesson. If you have already used TestDrive, the button will present the normal option to Book A Lesson.

You can also click a button to book a lesson with any teacher while viewing the teacher's profile page (pictured below), which you reach by clicking the More About This Teacher button (pictured above).

If you are booking a TestDrive lesson, you'll have the option to choose one of three TestDrive packages, which are explained in a help article here.

Booking A TestDrive Lesson

When you click on a button to book a TestDrive lesson with a teacher, the following page is displayed.

On this page you will:
  • Choose your preferred date and time for the lesson. (Please note that you cannot book a weekly recurring lesson on this page because TestDrive lessons are limited to a single lesson per instructor - a single "test drive".)
  • Choose a second date/time that would be convenient if your preferred time is not available.
  • And write a note introducing yourself to the teacher.
  • Then click the Book TestDrive Lesson button.

Your lesson request is forwarded to the teacher through the JamKazam service, and you are taken to the JamClass home page, where your requested lesson is listed (pictured below).

Your teacher and your preferred date and time for the lesson are displayed. The status is set to "Requested" to indicate that you have requested the lesson, and that the teacher has not yet confirmed this lesson.

Booking A Normal Lesson

If you have already used your TestDrive lesson package, and you are just booking a regular lesson, when you click on a button to book a lesson with a teacher, the following page is displayed.

On this page you will:
  • Choose whether you are just requesting a single lesson, or if you want to schedule a regular weekly recurring series of lessons.
  • Choose the length of lessons you want (e.g. 30 minutes, 60 minutes, etc.), and whether you want to pay for each lesson individually as you take it, or pay monthly. We'd advise paying attention to the monthly options, as instructors will often give you a discount for paying monthly, so this option can save you money
  • Write a note to introduce yourself to the teacher.
  • Choose your preferred date and time for the lesson. Note that for single lesson, this will be a single specific date and time. For weekly lessons, you'll be choosing a day of the week and a time.
  • Choose a second date/time that would be convenient if your preferred time is not available.
  • Then click the Book Lesson button.

Getting a Response From the Teacher

When a teacher responds to your lesson request, JamKazam will send an email to the email address you have associated with your JamKazam account. These emails can go into your spam filter, so please be sure to tell your email program that email from JamKazam is not spam, or you will miss lesson emails.

A lesson response email looks like this:

In this case, you can see that the teacher has proposed a different time for the lesson than the two dates/times you requested. To get more information, click the View Lesson Details button (pictured above), and you will be taken to the JamKazam website, with a page displayed for this lesson request (pictured below).

On this page, you can:

  • View the name and photo of the teacher, along with a short text message they have sent to introduce themselves.
  • You may click the option to accept the alternate date/time for the lesson proposed by the teacher, entering a message back to the student, and clicking the Accept & Schedule Lesson button.
  • If the teacher's proposed date/time does not work for you, you may click the "Propose alternate day/time" option, and select a date and time that would be better for you. If you do this, the orange action button at the lower right of the screen changes from Accept & Schedule Lesson to Propose Alternate Time. We'd advise in this case that you also write the teacher a note and suggest some day and time windows that you currently have available, so that if your proposed time doesn't work for the teacher, you can both zero in more quickly on a date/time that works for you both. Then click the Propose Alternate Time button, and your proposal and message will be forward to the teacher.
  • If for some reason you're having a hard time working out a date and time that is convenient for both you and the teacher, you can also click the "Cancel lesson request" option, and then click the Cancel Lesson orange button (as it again changes to reflect this option).

If you propose an alternate date/time, then you and the teacher simply bounce proposals back and forth until either of you accepts a proposed date/time from the other. And once either you or the teacher accepts a proposed date/time, the lesson is booked and confirmed.

Let's say you confirm a date/time proposed by the teacher. Then you will receive an email from JamKazam like the one below.

When you confirm a lesson with a teacher, we strongly recommend that you immediately add it to your calendar, so that you don't forget and miss the lesson. If you miss a lesson, you will still be charged for it.
